Bibliography of Model Literature Reviews

In this list you'll find references to articles, books, and essays that have literature reviews that I particularly like and that I have found useful in teaching. Where the sources are publicly available, I have included links.

The works below tend to be from the fields I have expertise and/or an interest in, so if you find one you like that you think should be on this list, feel free to suggest it 😊

Kuppens, A. H. 2010. 'English in Advertising: Generic Intertextuality in a Gloablizing Media Environment'. Applied Linguistics. 31 (1): 115-135. https://doi.org/10.1093/applin/amp014

This is a study on the use of English in the advertising of countries where English is not the native language.  A good sample literature review for teaching purposes can be found in the Introduction (pages 115-118). It has one of the classic review shapes (see my April 2022 bog) in that it starts with a broad descriptive statement and then moves into more analytical detail on patterns and trends in the study of multilingual advertising that establish the gap that the study then fills.

Culpeper, J. 1998. '(Im)politeness in Dramatic Dialogue', in Culpeper, J., Short, M., and Verdonk, P. (eds.). 1998. Exploring the Language of Drama. 83-95. London and New York: Routledge

In this essay Culpeper shows how a linguistic theory of impoliteness can be usefully applied in the interpretation of drama, which thrives on interpersonal conflict.  The literature review is in the Introduction (pgs. 83-4), where he makes the case for why we need a theory of linguistic impoliteness.  The review is short, clear, and succinct but still complex, and I find that it works very well as an introduction to reviews for students who have little to no experience with them.  It demonstrates that reviews should put forward an argument, and I have found that with a little practice and guidance students can usually map out the steps of the argument (an exercise that works well with post-it notes).
